What we do

The Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology (POST) is a research and knowledge exchange service based in the UK Parliament. It works to ensure that the best available research evidence and information is brought to bear on the legislative process and scrutiny of Government. It primarily supports the select committees of both Houses.

POST:

  • publishes impartial, non-partisan, timely and peer-reviewed research
  • helps Parliament to access experts and evidence
  • identifies emerging areas of interest to Parliament through horizon scanning
  • supports the exchange of information and expertise between researchers and the UK Parliament through fellowships and other knowledge exchange activities

Our history

Our work

  • Research

We produce impartial, timely and peer-reviewed briefings to make scientific research accessible to Parliament. We cover areas such as biology, health, energy, environment, physical and social sciences.

  • Horizon scanning

We organise horizon scanning activities that result in the production of a range of reports that help Parliament plan for the future, and support Select Committees in gaining research evidence on selected topics.

  • Rapid Evidence Assessments

Rapid Evidence Assessments are reports that are produced over a short period of time, based on a comprehensive search of academic databases. They are delivered in partnership with researchers from UK universities.

  • Fellowships

Joining a POST Fellowship is a once in a lifetime opportunity to work in the epicentre of policy-making. Our fellows learn how to write policy briefings with balance and impartiality.

  • Events

We host a range of events throughout the year, which range from roundtable discussions and seminars for parliamentarians, to public conferences with major academic bodies that are open to the public.

  • Resources

To help experts, students, and parliamentarians understand how policy and research intersect, we have developed a series of resources, such as guides on how to identify quality evidence, write briefings, and more.

  • Knowledge exchange

Our Knowledge Exchange Unit facilitates the exchange of information and expertise between researchers and Parliament, by training researchers and sharing engagement opportunities.

  • International work

We work with legislatures around the world to strengthen global scientific advisory capabilities.

  • The POST Board

The POST Board provides us with advice on our work. It meets quarterly to help ensure that we reflect the interests of Parliament.
