Cancers cause around 1 in 4 of all deaths in the UK. An overall healthy diet has the potential to lower cancer risk by an estimated 10-20%, though the association between diet and cancer incidence varies by cancer sites and sex. Some dietary factors can cause an increased risk of cancer while others have properties that are protective against cancers.

This work will update an existing briefing POSTnote Diet and Cancer (2009) and summarise the latest research examining the influence of diet on the risk of cancer development. It will also outline how evidence can inform public health policies.
