Technology infrastructure unpins our society and the UK relies on it for health, economic and national security. It includes data centres, physical computing components, such as microchips, fibreoptic cables and server farms, virtual software, such as server and mobile phone operating systems and telecommunications infrastructure, such as satellites. Risk to infrastructure could come from cyber attacks, disruptions to supply chains or physical threats. Recent disruptions to technology infrastructure include ransomware attacks to London hospitals.
This POSTnote would explain what UK technology infrastructure is, its importance to national and economy security and the UKs position compared to internationally. It could synthesise evidence around who and what would be impacted from disruptions to technology infrastructure, risks to technology infrastructure, and potential options for mitigating risks. Finally, it could outline current and future regulations in this area.
