Semi-conductors are critical to the functioning of electronic devices that underpin our economy, such as smart phones, ATMs, transport, medical devices, household appliances and the internet. In recent years there have been various concerns around the security of the supply of semi-conductors including disruptions to chip productions and the flow of materials and components, concerns about a lack of workers with the advanced technical skills, and concerns around the concentration of manufacturing in a few key regions.
This POSTnote would provide an overview of how semi-conductors work and their applications. It would also include an overview of the semi-conductor supply chain and outline the main organisations that develop and build them. It would summarise the main concerns and risks in their supply and steps being taken by the UK government and other stakeholders to help mitigate these risks.
Work on this briefing will begin in January 2024. We will be accepting stakeholder contributions until early March 2024.
