This POSTbrief will provide a technical overview of three key EU space programmes: Galileo (global satellite navigation), Copernicus (Earth observation) and Space Surveillance and Tracking (of spacecraft and debris, for the protection of space-based assets such as satellites). It will explain what these programmes are, how they operate, the services they provide (or will provide once completed), and outline UK involvement to-date. It will also discuss emerging issues surrounding the particular space based services that these programmes represent. The Government has identified these programmes to be of particular importance for the UK. It has expressed interest in maintaining some level of involvement with EUSST and Copernicus as a third party and recently allocated £92m to develop technical proposals for an alternative system to Galileo.
