I grew up in Merseyside and went to a comprehensive school, later studying at Manchester and Sheffield Universities. I completed a PhD in English Literature in 2014 and went on to work for education and human rights charities and a think tank. My roles involved running programmes, organising events, and overseeing communications.
I joined the Knowledge Exchange Unit in POST in 2020. I supported researchers to engage with UK Parliament and helped parliamentary teams to connect with researchers in their work. In 2023 I moved to my current role, which involves writing briefings for parliamentarians on social sciences topics.
At the start of my career, I think I might have felt intimidated to work somewhere as big and old as Parliament, but day-to-day working here is friendly and dynamic. Everyone is very supportive, and asking questions is encouraged – which helps me to continue to develop. I’m impressed by the amount of training, support and resources available and I’m learning all the time. There are also a range of Workplace Equality Networks here, including ParliOut which supports LGBT+ people, and this is especially important to me as I’m bi/pan.
